The Cisco network appliance management tool “WOS” is used to manage and monitor Cisco switches, routers, wireless access points, and videophones. The tool runs on a list of supported operating systems and also has a Windows version.
Nowadays, most business networking users use mobile equipment, such as wireless access points and videophones, in the workplace to extend their network’s reach. Such equipment may be directly connected to the enterprise’s LAN or it may be using wireless protocol such as IEEE 802.11 to communicate with other devices. The Cisco network appliance management tool “WOS” was built to help network managers more easily manage and monitor Cisco network equipment. WOS can be used to view the status, configuration, and performance of many types of networking equipment including wireless access points, routers, videophones, and switches. It has many other features as well, such as “Inventory” for tracking equipment, “Alert” for issuing specific alerts, “Reports” for producing reports, and “CVC” for configuring Cisco Vision Centre Video. To install WOS on a supported operating system, all you have to do is download the software, and follow the instructions provided by the software vendor. In addition, you also need to install specific configurations and rules on the device you wish to manage. A quick check on the Cisco.com network appliance management tool (WOS) page will give you all the information you need to complete your task. Once you have the WOS tool installed on your network devices, you will be able to view all the major functions and statistics related to your equipment.
This chapter explores the usage of a Cisco network appliance management tool called WOS. A toolbox of WOS functions is displayed in Figure 1.
